Hadleigh Castle
Review by Beccy

Hadleigh Castle

Hadleigh Castle is a Grade 1 listed building. The construction of the castle began in 1230. It was built for Hubert de Burgh, Chief Justiciar to King John and regent for young King Henry III. Henry confiscated Hadleigh Castle and continued building further additions were made in the mid 14th century by Edward III, it is these later additions that are most visible today.

Hadleigh Castle

It became the custom for Hadleigh to be granted to a tenant, reverting to the King on their death. Traditionally the tenants were usually the king's consort, among those three of King Henry VIII's wives - Catherine of Aragon, Anne of Cleves and Catherine Parr. In 1551, King Edward VI sold the property, allowing its stone to be used for other building projects.

  • Open access at any reasonable time.
  • Free.
  • There is room for a few cars to park at the end of Castle Lane, otherwise there is a car park in Hadleigh ½ mile away.
  • Suitable for picnics.
  • Dogs allowed on lead.
  • Not suitable for wheelchairs.
  • No toilets.
  • Veiws are stunning.
Distance/Time Taken: 16.4 miles. 31minutes drive from Clean Image.

Comments: On a nice day, the view from the castle is worth the trip. We suggest parking up there and then walking down to the Cockle Sheds and Old Leigh for a plate of winkles and a pint ~ This is quite a long walk (2 miles) but you could always drive there.
